How does getting children to see with awe and wonder make a difference to how they learn?
Why do you think we humans are able to feel awe and wonder?
Going Deeper
The Bible often points to things that are amazing, and which feel even impossible. The poem below is an example from the Book of Psalms and written by David who began as a shepherd but also one day became king. He wasn’t perfect but he was amazed by God and wrote poems or songs about it.
Psalm 8
For the director of music. According to gittith. A psalm of David.
1 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
in the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
5 You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honour.
6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
7 all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
8 the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.
9 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
What is David amazed about/in awe of?
What does his awe and wonder at the world lead to him thinking? Is this the same as you when you hear an incredible piece of music/see the stars/catch a beautiful sunrise/teach something fascinating?
What difference do you think it makes if God is behind everything that is good and wonderful?
Reflect
This Psalm begins and ends saying that God, not his world is wonderful (the Bible often mentions his 'name' when referring to God himself). Christians believe that everything in creation spills out of the glory of God – he created it all and it all reflects, or should reflect how good he is. Unfortunately, we humans have not always looked after the world we’ve been given to enjoy.
Knowing the maker of the world is amazing! But this Psalm, in verse 4 says that God also knows and cares about us humans. Elsewhere it even says that God knows the words we’ll say before we say them and the number of hairs on our heads!
Would it cause awe and wonder or another emotion in you to know that God cares and knows you like that?
How can we share our wonder more in our classes?
To give you a bit of time to think or to pray, listen to this song together. It's 7 mins long! You might want to listen to it all or fade it out gently.
After you've listened to the song, pray together. If you're not sure about prayer, feel free to sit quietly and listen to what others say - there's no pressure to join in.
Going Further
Christians love to talk about their awe and wonder at God but sometimes they need encouragement! What do you want to ask a Christian? What could you share if you are a Christian?
